SALISBURY ó Residents of the historic Brooklyn South Square neighborhood will ask Salisbury City Council to make their streets safer by lowering the speed limit and installing crosswalks and four-way stop signs.
City Council meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 217 S. Main St.
To help pedestrians safely cross four-lane Long Street, neighbors also will ask the city to install buttons and walk lights at the intersection of Long and Bank streets. They will request four-way stop signs at three intersections: Shaver and Fisher streets, Shaver and Bank streets and Shaver and Horah streets.
In a memo, city staff has recommended lowering the speed limit to 25 mph on portions of East Fisher Street, East Bank Street, East Horah Street, East Monroe Street, South Shaver Street and South Clay Street because the streets are primarily residential and run through a historic district.
The streets are located in the southeast quadrant of the downtown area.
The neighborhood collected signatures from about 60 percent of the property owners in the affected area and complied with established policies, said the memo from Traffic Operations Manager Wendy Brindle to Tony Cinquemani, public services director.
The Brooklyn South Square Neighborhood Association is also asking the city to lower the speed limit on Long Street, which becomes Old Concord Road, and wants crosswalks at seven intersections along the major thoroughfare.
Also Tuesday, the Council will consider:
Granting a request regarding private decorative street lighting on Crenshaw Court.
An update from staff on street lighting
An update from staff on the Klumac Road Grade Separation
A resolution opposing the consolidation of judicial and prosecutorial districts
Comments from Interim City Manager Doug Paris, including a review of first quarter goals.

The Salisbury Greenway Phase 2 between the Crescent on Hoganís Valley Way and Forestdale Drive in Meadowbrook is now open for pedestrians and bicycles.
La Fiesta de Rowan 2011 will be held from 11 a.m. to p.m. Saturday at Knox Middle School, 1625 West Park Road.
The Salisbury Fire Department will host an Open House from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 13 at Fire Station 3, 1604 W. Innes St., including equipment displays, fire safety lessons and a ěhousingî of one of the cityís newest fire trucks.
The public is invited to attend.
