The N.C. Carolina Society of Historians recently presented Rowan County resident Rodney Cress with the Barringer Award of Excellence.
A statement from the society said Cress received the award “in grateful recognition of his dedication and devotion to preserving and perpetuating North Carolina’s rich history.”
The award was based on his 16-month effort to establish a memorial marker for Civil War Medal of Honor recipient Lorenzo Deming, who is buried in the Salisbury National Cemetery.
“Without his efforts, this American hero’s resting place would not have become a part of North Carolina’s history,” the Society of Historians statement said.
