SALISBURY — A Salisbury dentist is offering cash and prizes in exchange for sweets.
This Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to the office of Dr. Scott Keadle and receive $1 per pound (5-pound limit per child) and free toothbrushes. The dentist also will draw for two free children’s bikes.
Keadle, a solo practitioner who has practiced in Rowan County since 1990, will provide up to $1,000 total.
“Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing your teeth are great preventive measures, but doing away with excess sweets would really give your teeth a healthy boost,” Keadle said in a press release. “Kids can have the fun of trick-or-treating, and now their piggy banks will benefit as well.”
Children will receive a goody bag of gifts, limit one per child while supplies last.
Sugar consumption for kids is rising about 2 percent per year and is at about 50 million tons annually, Keadle said. Candy can damage braces, lead to hyperactivity and weight gain. Keadle said the new sweet and sour candies are even more damaging to teeth.
The candy will be collected at Keadle’s office, 480 Jake Alexander Blvd. W., from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31. Those who can’t make it then can drop off any unwanted candy at the office until Nov. 4.
The candy must be unopened.
