Writers’ Workshop classes in November

The Writersí Workshop is sponsoring contests and classes for any level writer. Classes meet at Providence Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.

Nov. 5: Screenwriting Workshop with Nathan Ross Freeman ó The class will receive an overview of writing for the screen, and how to produce, direct and distribute a film of your script. Various formats, structures and techniques will be discussed, as well as tips on creating interesting characters and realistic dialogue. Students may bring a screenplay idea or synopsis to the class for review. Freeman has written and produced indie feature films such as ěMr. Bonesî and ěAuthoring Action.î He won the N.C. Arts Council Fellowship for Hannah Elias, and the Great Lakes Film Festival Screenplay Contest for Geist. Meets Saturday, 12-5 p.m. $75/$70 members.
Nov. 12: Revising For Publication with Karen Ackerson ó Writers of fiction or non-fiction will learn how to edit and revise their works before submitting to an agent or publisher. Techniques will be taught on how to grab the readerís interest by eliminating unnecessary details, building tension, and fine-tuning dialogue and descriptions. Students may bring five pages (double-spaced) to the class for discussion. Ackerson is Senior Editor at the Renbourne Agency, and has edited over 120 stories, books and essays. Meets Saturday, 12-5 p.m. $75/$70 members.
Dec. 10: Poetry Workshop with Richard Krawiec ó This workshop for beginning to experienced poets will focus on revising poems, and how to turn rejection letters into acceptances. Information on where to publish will also be given. Students may bring up to five poems for in-class revision. Krawiec’s new book of poetry, ěShe Hands me the Razor,î won rave reviews from N.C. poet laureates Fred Chappell and Kathryn Stripling Byer. He has won fellowships from the NEA and the N.C. Arts Council, and his poems have been published in numerous literary journals including Shenandoah and N.C Literary Review. Meets Saturday, 12-5 pm. $75/$70 members.
23rd Annual Memoirs Contest Deadline: Postmarked by Nov. 30.
