KANNAPOLIS ó The Kannapolis City school district will host STEM Day from 9 a.m. to noon today.
The event will feature students and teachers from all schools in the district demonstrating activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
The activities will take place at the A.L. Brown High Schoolís STEM Academy.
Parents and community members are invited to drop in anytime to see children at all grade levels taking part in STEM lessons.
ěWe want people to see how fun, exciting, and important STEM education is,î Dr. Debra Morris, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. ěI think people will be amazed when they see even our youngest children engaged in lessons about science, technology, engineering and math.î
Morris said STEM takes a different approach to learning.
ěItís much more fun and a lot better at helping children understand subjects that are vital to their future,î she said.
During STEM Day, students will be demonstrating activities like DNA fingerprinting, science investigations, animal adaptations, math games, robotics and video productions.
There also will be lug-nut challenges and other activities related to the BioMoto partnership between Kannapolis City Schools, the North Carolina Research Campus and the Motorsports Industry. BioMoto gives eighth-graders the opportunity to learn about the connections between Science, Math, Health and Motorsports, and it is funded by a grant from the Golden Leaf Foundation.
All STEM Day activities are free and open to the public. More information and a video about STEM Day are available online at kannapolis.k12.nc.us.
