Salisbury’s girls tennis team opened the 2A playoffs with a 9-0 rout on the road against Surry Central on Monday.
Joy Loeblein, Katelyn Storey, Erika Nelson, Sallie Kate Meyerhoeffer, Alexandra Drye and Caroline Graham won singles matches for the Hornets (16-1).
Loeblein-Nelson, Storey-Madeline Hoskins and Meyerhoeffer-Drye won in doubles.
East is at home today against Mount Pleasant in the 3A playoffs, and Carson travels to Hickory.
Prep volleyball
Salisbury’s volleyball team defeated Thomasville 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 25-6) in the first round of the CCC tournament on Monday.
No. 4 seed Salisbury plays against No. 1 seed West Davidson today in the semifinals. East Davidson is the host for the semifinals and finals.
Leading Salisbury on Monday was Brielle Blaire with 13 kills, four aces and 14 service points.
Katie Canipe had a team-high 18 service points. Nyasia Harris led with five blocks, and Jenny Patel sparked the defense with five digs.
Salisbury is assured of a playoff berth.
Also in the CCC on Monday, No. 3 East Davidson swept No. 6 Lexington.
Carson defeated East Rowan 25-11, 25-9, 25-5 in the first round of the NPC playoffs on Monday.
No. 3 seed Carson plays No. 2 seed West Iredell today.
The loss ended the season for the sixth-seeded Mustangs.
West Iredell beat No. 7 seed West Rowan in first-round action, ending the Falcons’ season.
Heather Kimel had nine kills for Davie in a CPC tournament sweep of R.J. Reynolds on Monday.
Prep soccer
Salisbury’s boys soccer team stayed unbeaten in the CCC with a 3-0 win against Lexington on Monday.
Connor Miller scored on a PK for the Hornets.
Freshman Michael Brown made it 2-0 on a nice setup by Emmy Turcios.
Kenny Bonilla finished on a through ball by Bobby Cardelle for the final goal by the Hornets (15-1-1, 7-0 CCC).
Salisbury welcomed Cardelle back from illness and hopes to get Luke Hutton back soon.
The Salisbury-Central Davidson match that had been tentatively set for tonight has now been postponed to next week.
Jayvee football
Salisbury’s jayvee football team beat Lexington 63-40 — no kidding, 63-40 — in a Monday makeup game.
It was a season-high offensive effort for the powerful Hornets, who led 42-6 at halftime.
The Hornets (8-0) won their 13th straight game, dating back to last season, and took their 26th in a row in the CCC.
Riley Myers threw a 20-yard TD pass to Roy Vinson and a 12-yard scoring pass to Jon Mark Petty. Myers also ran 1 yard for a score.
A.J. Hill had scoring runs of 28 and 21 yards. Travon Ellis had scoring jaunts of 32 and 67 yards. Malik White rushed 32 yards for a TD. Tony Krider ran 14 yards for a TD.
Jeremiah Billingslea had an interception, and Stephen Mazur kicked a bushel of PATS.
College volleyball
Livingstone’s volleyball team cruised to a sweep of Virginia-Lynchburg 25-14, 25-11, 25-15 on Monday.
Leading the Blue Bears (12-12) with 10 kills was Lakitta Hicks.
Local golf
Larry Luther had a hole-in-one on No. 3 at Warrrior while playing in the weekly GARS event on Monday.
Luther used a 6-iron on the 119-yard hole. He was playing with Clyde Crawford, Clarence Derrick and David Scearce.
Newberry holds a six-shot lead over Carson-Newman after Monday’s first round of the Patsy Rendleman Women’s Golf Invitational, hosted by Catawba at Country Club of Salisbury.
Newberry carded a 301 as a team and was led by Maria Besio. She shot the lone sub-par round with a 71.
Besio holds a one-shot lead over Marry Tunnell of Carson-Newman.
Freshman Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) led Catawba with a round of 79. She’s tied for 15th.
Middle school soccer
Sacred Heart’s jayvee soccer team defeated Community School of Davidson 2-1 on Monday night to finishing the season as JPAC Conference champions.
Juan Salazar scored the first goal, with Gavin Fleming assisting. Eric Turner scored in the second half.
Local football
The Salisbury 49ers swept the Charlotte Saints on Sunday in Charlotte.
The 5-6 age team won 14-6.
The 7-8 age team won 22-0.
The 9-10 team won 6-0 in overtime. The 11-12 team won 22-6.
The 49ers will play their final home games on Sunday at Knox Middle, with the first kickoff at 1 p.m.
