On Saturday, Oct. 8, the Salisbury-Rowan Symphony Society kicks off its 45th season by hosting the North Carolina Symphony in Keppel Auditorium at Catawba College.
Themed “Great Legends,” it promises an evening of just that with Night on Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky, Suite from Peer Gynt by Grieg, and Schubert’s Symphony No. 9, “The Great.” The concert begins at 7:30 p.m; the box office opens at 6:30 p.m.
Conductor William Henry Curry leads the North Carolina Symphony. This is his sixteenth season with the NC Symphony, and he has traveled to Salisbury numerous times to not only conduct the NCS on the Salisbury Symphony’s concert series but also to conduct the NCS when they perform educational concerts for Rowan County’s fifth graders. A “legend” of sorts, himself, Mr. Curry is also a composer, and his works have been played by many of America’s finest orchestras. The late William Warfield of Porgy and Bess fame narrated the North Carolina premiere of his Eulogy for a Dream in January 2002 to an enthusiastic audience and critical acclaim.

Salisbury Symphony season tickets offer substantial savings over individual concert tickets and may be purchased right up through Oct. 8. Individual tickets for the North Carolina Symphony concert are $20 for adults, $6 for students, and $4 for children ages 8 and younger. “Balcony For A Buck” is offered for this concert: anyone appearing at the box office the evening of the concert may choose to sit in the balcony for only one dollar. The Salisbury Symphony’s Season of Musical Stories continues with concerts in November, February, March, and May. Its popular annual holiday classic “The Nutcracker” is scheduled for December 17-18 , and the equally popular “Pops at the Post” will be held June 2.
