MOCKSVILLE ó Authorities in Davie County say someone broke into the historic Cooleemee Plantation home over the weekend and stole nearly $150,000 worth of antique silverware and family jewelry.
The Davie County Sheriffís Office said someone broke into the 1855 home Sunday night, multiple news outlets reported Tuesday. Neither Davie County Sheriff A.C. Stokes nor lead investigator Detective Sgt. Scot Kimel could be reached by phone Tuesday afternoon.
According to news reports, the thieves pried open a window to get inside and disabled the homeís telephone lines and alarm system.
They stole more than 100 pieces of jewelry and silver, some of which was made by Paul Revere and has been featured in history books. According to the reports, the silverware was buried during the Civil War to protect it from Union Gen. George Stonemanís forces.
Some of the silverware has family monograms, ěLPHî or ěDî in calligraphy script. Authorities are asking antique dealers to be on the lookout for the stolen items and call Kimel at 336-936-2966 with information about the break-in or stolen items.
The home is off U.S. 64 between Mocksville and Lexington. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The owners are the descendants of Peter Hairston, who arrived in the U.S. in the early 1700s.
