Catawba junior Hannah Kovach (East Rowan) is 4-0 in singles matches this season.
Kovach won at No. 6 singles against Pfeiffer, Belmont Abbey and Barton.
Moving up to No. 5 on Monday, she won in a tiebreaker against Johnson C. Smith and also teamed with Steffi Cook for a win at No. 3 doubles. Catawba (3-1) beat the Golden Bulls 9-0.
n Catawba’s unbeaten men (4-0) also swept the Golden Bulls.
n College football
Livingstone junior Dorian Edwards was named CIAA Defensive Lineman of the Week.
Edwards was responsible for 15 tackles against Shaw.
Livingstone plays at Edward Waters in Jacksonville, Fla., at 3 p.m. on Saturday.n Brevard’s Aaron Reese and Mars Hill’s Jonas Randolph shared SAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Reese scored five touchdowns. Randolph rushed for 220 yards.
Wingate defensive Jack Taylor and Tusculum kick returner Deonte Gist were the other league honorees.
n College volleyball
Averett setter Nicole Barringer (South Rowan) was named Rookie of the Week for the USA South Conference.
Barringer averaged 11.6 assists, 1.6 digs and 1.0 kills per set last week as the Cougars went 3-0.
Barringer’s best effort was 36 assists, eight digs, four kills, two service aces and two digs against Meredith.
It was the second time this season she’s been honored by USA South.
n College runners
Catawba’s Christian Crifasi (26:34) won the 8K Hagan Stone Cross Country Classic on Saturday. Catawba’s men placed seventh out of nine teams, while the Catawba women finished fourth out of seven schools.
Olivia Myers led Catawba’s women. She was 16th, running a 5K in 20:53.
n Prep soccer
Salisbury overwhelmed Thomasville 10-0 in CCC boys soccer on Monday night at Ludwig Stadium.
Emmy Turcios had a hat trick for the Hornets.
Backs Spencer Dixon, Brock Overcash, John Canipe and Jordy Sanchez scored their first goals of the season.
Bobby Cardelle, Kenny Bonilla and Michael Brown also registered goals.
Sanchez, Bonilla, Tripp Caldwell and Lucas Capito accounted for two assists each. Turcios added one.
The Hornets (12-0-1, 4-0), whose only blemish was a tie with 4A Lake Norman, are ranked third in 2A behind undefeated Shelby and Carrboro. Carrboro has tied twice.
Salisbury has a CCC match at East Davidson on Wednesday.
n Salisbury’s jayvees rolled 6-1 against Thomasville.
n In other CCC matchups on Monday, 11th-ranked Central Davidson whipped Lexington 6-0, and West Davidson blanked East Davidson 3-0.
n Carson lost to surging North Iredell 2-1 on Monday.
North Iredell scored first.
Carson tied it when Wyatt Bigelow was fouled and Ivan Espinoza converted a PK.
North Iredell (5-1 NPC) scored late in the game on a free kick to win the match.
Carson (6-9, 2-3) is at East Rowan on Wednesday.
n In other NPC games on Monday, Statesville beat South Rowan 10-0, and West Iredell rolled 6-0 against West Rowan.

n Prep cross country
The Rowan County cross country meet will be held at Dan Nicholas Park on Wednesday. The boys race will start at 3 p.m., with the girls running at 3:30.
n Prep tennis
South Rowan edged North Iredell 5-4 for an NPC win.
Aspen Mushala, Bethany Karriker and Taylor James won in singles for South.
Madalyn Freeman-Vanessa Evans and Sydnie Starnes-Karriker won in doubles.
n Jayvee football
Salisbury’s jayvee football team stayed unbeaten with a 48-6 win against Carson in a Monday makeup game.
The Hornets completed a county sweep and won their 11th straight dating back to last season.
Six Hornets found the end zone, while Jaquez Finger, Bobby Johnson and Jeffrey Burton led the defensive charge.
QB Riley Myers opened the scoring with a 20-yard run. A pick-6 by Jacquarius Givens pushed the lead to 14-0.
Travon Ellis scored from 18 yards out and Malik White scored on a 3-yard run for a 28-0 halftime lead.
Salisbury broke three long scoring runs in the second half. Tony Krider romped in from 67 yards out. White had an electrifying 70-yard score. A.J. Hill traveled 60 yards.
Stephen Mazur kicked six PATs.
n Prep football
Friday’s Carson-South Rowan game at South will be a “Pink Out” game to raise money for the schools’ Relay for Life teams. South fans are asked to wear pink or red. Carson fans are asked to wear pink or orange. Relay for Life team members will circulate through the stands and collect donations from students and the community.
n South will also salute all its head football coaches at Friday’s games.
Reid Bradshaw, Larry Deal, Rick Vanhoy and current head coach Jason Rollins will be recognized during pregame ceremonies, while the late Lope Linder, South’s first head coach, will be represented by assistants Tony DiPaolo, Jim Chester and Marshall Murphy.
Coaches will meet in the cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. Former players and assistants are invited to join them there.
n A.L. Brown coach Mike Newsome will be the featured speaker at the Kannapolis Branch of the Cabarrus County Public Library on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m.
A short question and answer period will follow Newsome’s speaking engagement.

With basketball season approaching, Statesville, often a power in the NPC, is still seeking a girls basketball coach.
The Statesville Record and Landmark reported veteran coach Todd Jones has taken leave of absence.
The first official day of practice is Oct. 31.
n Local golf
The McCanless Couples played with a two-person Captain’s Choice format.
Phyllis Myers and Paul Hill Jr. won, with Rick and Treva Honeycutt placing second.
Closest to the pin was won by Treva Honeycutt. Tim Earnhardt won longest putt.
n Mid. school tennis
Salisbury Academy’s girls tennis team continued an undefeated season with a 9-0 win against Charlotte’s Trinity Episcopal on Monday.
Grace Steinman, Maria Capito, Emily Capito, Ann Fisher Lindsay, Juliana Anderson and Jordan McCall won singles matches.
Steinman-Emily Capito, Maria Capito-McCall and Anderson-Annabel Barr were the winning doubles teams.
Next for the Jaguars is Winston-Salem’s Summit School on Thursday.
n Hall of Fame
The Davidson County Sports Hall of Fame will induct five new members Oct. 15, including the late Joseph “Scoop” McCrary.
He was sports editor of the Salisbury Post from 1944-48 before serving as sports editor of the Lexington Dispatch from 1948-1972.
