BOSTON ó One year ago, Wake Forest (3-1, 2-0 ACC) had a hard time believing it could make a big play. That’s changed with a good start this season.
Tanner Price threw a 47-yard TD pass to Chris Givens on Wake Forest’s first possession of the second half and converted a key 44-yard pass to Terence Davis late in the game as the Demon Deacons held off Boston College 27-19 on Saturday.
Hanging onto the five-point lead and backed deep in his own end, Price looked across the field ó at his third option ó and found a streaking Davis deep down the right sideline on a third-and-15 from his own 15. The wide receiver came up with the catch as he fell onto his back.
On the next play, flanker Michael Campanaro hit Given for 36 yards on a trick play, setting up Jimmy Newman’s 22-yard field goal that made it 27-19 with 2:59 to go.
Duke 31, FIU 27
MIAMI ó Juwan Thompson scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead Duke past Florida International 31-27.
The Blue Devils (3-2) rallied from a 10-point deficit early in the fourth quarter and took the lead on Thompson’s 9-yard run with 6:52 remaining. On the previous play, Jordan DeWalt-Ondijo sacked Panthers quarterback Wesley Carroll, forcing a fumble. Anthony Young-Wiseman recovered the fumble at the Florida International 17 and ran it to the 9-yard line.
The Panthers (3-2) drove to the Blue Devils 12, but Carroll’s fourth-down pass to T.Y. Hilton in the end zone fell incomplete with 2:29 remaining.
Sean Renfree completed 28 of 43 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns while Carroll finished 26 of 40 for 328 yards.
Virginia 21, Idaho 20, OT
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ó Underdog Idaho went for the win instead of forcing a second overtime, and Brian Reader’s two-point conversion pass fell incomplete as error-prone Virginia (3-2) escaped with a 21-20 victory.
Miami 45, B-Cookman 14
MIAMI ó Lamar Miller ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns and Tommy Streeter caught two scoring passes.
Maryland 28, Towson 3
COLLEGE PARK, Md. ó Danny O’Brien threw two second half touchdowns and Maryland’s defense forced four second half turnovers, helping the Terrapins pull away.
Maryland (2-2) snapped a two-game losing streak with the win.
