Oct. 8: Writing for Magazines and Newspapers with Mike Weinstein. Participants will learn specific techniques on writing and submitting stories and essays to newspapers, magazines and online markets. The class will learn how to write lively, inspired pieces and receive tips on interviewing and doing research. Students may bring five pages of work to the class for evaluation and revision. Weinstein is features editor at The Charlotte Observer, and has won numerous awards for his editing work on lead articles and stories. Meets Saturday, noon-5 p.m. $75/$70 members.
Oct. 15: Writing Your Memoirs with Anne Barnhill. The class will learn how to get started or continue with their memoirs, and will look at notable memoirs to compare various themes, structures and writing styles. In-class writing exercises will be given, and students may bring up to five pages, double-spaced, for review. Barnhill is the author of ěWhat You Long Forî and ěAt Home in the Land of Oz: Autism, My Sister and Me.î She holds an MFA in creative writing from UNC-Wilmington and teaches workshops throughout the state. Meets Saturday, noon-5 p.m. $75/$70 members.
Story of a foster child
Chi-Chi Ray-Leazer has published ěFoster Child ó A Broken Silence,î the story of her experience as a foster child.
She wanted to tell her story and be able to give scholarships to graduating foster children with interest in medical careers through sales of the book. Her sources include Salisbury Post articles and other media reports of violence involving families.
Ray-Leazer earned a bachelorís degree in communications, served in the Army National Guard, got a second degree in nursing and a masterís degree in healthcare administration. She lives in Salisbury with her husband.

Book tour
Lady J/Sharice Cuthrell is launching a book tour today, starting at the Wrenn House, 115 S. Jackson St., from 2-4 p.m. Her next Salisbury stop will be Oct. 15, 4-6 p.m., at A Little Sumthiní Sumthiní at 117 W. Innes St.
She is the author of several books, including ěI Know Iím Bad,î available at www.xlibris.com or www.lulu.com. Her tour includes Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York.
Kannapolis book sale
The Friends of the Kannapolis Library will have a used Book Sale Friday, Oct. 14, from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Old Cabarrus Bank building in Cannon Village. Proceeds support the purchase of materials for the Kannapolis Branch and its special programs throughout the year.
We are also accepting ěgently usedî hardcover, paperbacks in adult and childrenís materials. Donations can be brought to the library and a tax receipt will be given for any donation. For more information, call the library at 704-920-1180.
