Summer Reading Challenge was a great experience
Wow! What a great night for the seventh annual Summer Reading Challenge. Our hometown author John Hart was a terrific guest and a popular one, as well, bringing out over 350 fans from Salisbury-Rowan and the region. This was the largest audience ever for the Reading Challenge and it was a most enjoyable evening.
It was my pleasure to facilitate the event, which attracted generous sponsors whom I wish to thank — Trinity Oaks Retirement Community, Catawba College, Livingstone College, F&M Bank, the Salisbury Post, the Literary Bookpost and Marathon Business Center-Xerox. They have all been part of the Reading Challenge group of underwriters from the very beginning.
We were most fortunate in being able to hold our event at Trinity Oaks where all the guests Thursday night were graciously welcomed and treated with real Southern hospitality. Special thanks go to Mike Walsh, executive director; Renee Bradshaw, associate executive director; Diane Hundley, director of marketing and sales; and Patricia Andrews, director of dining services.
An event like the Summer Reading Challenge requires the efforts of a number of people, all of whom are passionate about our community, working together and, of course, reading great books. We all had a winner this year with “Iron House” and its author John Hart. He has been a guest of the Challenge three times and we are most grateful.
Special thanks also go to Deirdre Parker-Smith, book page editor of the Salisbury Post, who interviewed John Hart and led the discussion of all his four books. She is an essential part of the Reading Challenge program and its success.

Church event a blessing
Thursday night was a blessing to many Rowan County families. I want to thank Enon Baptist Church for hosting its second annual Rowan County Challenger Baseball Game. We greatly appreciate the food and fellowship. Also, thank you for providing our children with an awesome experience.

Ty Cobb Jr. has my ear and he can discuss his ideas in more technical detail with me any time. Eisenhower’s highway system was near genius in the ’50s; maybe Ty’s time is now.
