Card ministry for soldiers meets Friday night
People who would like to help share Christmas cheer with members of the Armed Forces may find an outlet in Linda Beck’s card ministry.
For several years, Beck has collected used Christmas cards to recycle into cards for soldiers.
On Friday night, the Piedmont Singles at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church will be cutting the faces off used cards to make new cards.
The singles group is for those over 50, single, divorced, widowed or, as Linda puts it, “just plain lonely.”
The gathering begins at 7 p.m. in the church fellowship building. Bring a covered dish and a pair of scissors.
Daughters of Confederacy to host lectures
The North Carolina Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy is commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the War Between the States with various activities during the next four years.
Sesquicentennial Committee Chairman Sue Curtis of Salisbury said the Division’s Sesquicentennial Lecture Series will consist of eight free lectures throughout the state during each year.
The next lecture will be presented by author Chris Hartley in partnership with the Charlotte Museum of History on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. The museum is at 3500 Shamrock Drive and has ample parking in the front of the building and many exhibits to view before and after the lecture.
Hartley graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in journalism and a secondary concentration in history. He is the author of “Stuart’s Tarheels: James B. Gordon and His North Carolina Cavalry,” for which he received a Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal from the Robert F. Hoke Chapter 78, United Daughters of the Confederacy. He is a frequent speaker at historical events and has participated in a number of Salisbury Confederate Prison Symposiums. He has published several articles on the Civil War and his study on Stoneman’s raid in North Carolina was featured in a 2010 issue of the Blue & Gray Magazine. His newest book, “Stoneman’s Raid, 1865,” gives great detail on the towns entered and the destruction done in this invasion. Hartley will have copies of his book available for sale.
The Sesquicentennial Committee has held three lectures thus far in the state. The first lecture was on May 20 at Catawba College with speaker Dr. Gary Freeze. The second was on July 25 at Greensboro in partnership with the Greensboro Historical Museum with author William Trotter. The third was on Aug. 13 at the Veterans Restoration Quarters in Asheville with Freeze.
