There is a bit of bad news at the Salisbury Farmers Market this week. Miller Farm will probably not have any more corn this season and the Country Garden people tell me there will be no more watermelons.
But do not despair. The good news is that fall vegetables are now front and center.There will be a lot of greens of every kind on hand. Larry Pruitt, Jack Gill, Bostian Farm and Eagle Farm will have mixed greens, mustard, kale and turnip greens. Oh yes, there will also be turnips and sweet potatoes.
Shoppers will still find a good selection of tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, onions, peppers and potatoes. Several varieties of peas were available including Purple Hull, Dixie Bell, Red Ripper and Big Boy. October beans will also be on hand this Saturday.
The cut flowers are especially beautiful this time of year. Lee Ly and Seng Yang have stunning dahlias and tremendous sun flowers. Joyce’s Flowers will have a good many mums in several colors and plenty of pansy plants in flats.
Kris at How Sweet It Is will have pumpkin bread and iced cut out cookies in addition to her usual array of enticing baked goods. Emma of the Bread Basket is bringing apple dumplings, apple cake and persimmon pudding along with all her other selections. Both these fine ladies are happy to take special orders.
