A CCC soccer showdown was not a showdown at all Monday as Salisbury (9-0-1) scored four goals in the first half and beat Central Davidson 4-1 in a game called at intermission due to lightning.
Central was 8-1-1 coming in.
Kenny Bonilla scored 57 seconds into the match. Emmy Turcios scored twice. B.J. Woods added the final goal.
Bonilla, Turcios and Zack Sukkasem added assists.
Salisbury plays Lexington at home Wednesday and travels to West Davidson for a makeup game on Thursday.
Prep tennis
Salisbury’s girls tennis team had no problem beating CCC foe Central Davidson 9-0 on Monday.
Joy Loeblein, Katelyn Storey, Erika Nelson, Madeline Hoskins, Sallie Kate Meyerhoeffer and Alexandra Drye all won in singles for the Hornets (12-1, 6-0), losing just six games in the six matches.
The doubles teams of Loeblein-Nelson, Storey-Hoskins and Meyerhoeffer-Drye all won easily.
College football
Catawba linebacker Lakeem Perry was named SAC Defensive Player of the Week for his effort in Saturday’s win at Tusculum.
Perry recorded nine tackles — including a sack and two tackles for loss — an interception and a fumble recovery. His interception late in the third quarter set up Catawba’s final score. Perry’s efforts helped Catawba hold the Pioneers to minus-4 rushing yards.
Mars Hill running back Jonas Randolph and Wingate kick returner Ben Pinkard were the other honorees.
Middle school tennis
The China Grove girls won 5-4 against West Rowan.
Single winners for the Red Devils were Margaret Correll, Mariah Mason and Megan Loan.
Doubles winners were Cierra Hunter, Loan, Mason and Peyton Rodgers.
China Grove plays Knox today and Mooresville Wednesday.n Southeast beat China Grove 8-1 on Monday.
Singles winners for the Patriots were Mackenzie Menius, Rachel Gunsch, Maggie Hollar, Samantha Liddle, and Mackenzie Koontz. Doubles wins came from Menius-Gunsch, Hollar-Peoples and Liddle-Koontz.
Undefeated Salisbury Academy’s girls beat Sacred Heart 8-1, winning five singles matches and sweeping doubles.
Salisbury Academy plays next against Trinity Episcopal in Charlotte on Oct. 3.
Catawba hoops camp
Catawba will host Christmas basketball camps at Catawba, Covenant Classical in Concord and Avondale Presbyterian in Charlotte.
Each camp location has a half-day and full-day option. Half-day is open to ages 5-8 with full-day for ages 7-15.
Camp dates for Salisbury are Dec. 22-24, Concord is Dec. 21-23, and the Charlotte camp runs from Dec. 19-21
The half-day camp is $45 and the full-day camp is $85. Sign-up by Nov. 15 and receive a $20 discount for the full-day camp and a $10 discount for the half-day camp.
Legion tournament
The High Point-Thomasville Post 87 HiToms are hosting an 18U fall baseball tournament Oct. 15-16 at historic Finch Field. The tournament is a round-robin, three-game guarantee.

The East Rowan Booster Club will host its next meeting on Monday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in the school library.
Volleyball sessions
Homefield Advantage at Competitive Sports Properties will hold fall volleyball sessions starting Oct 3. Sessions are from 6-7:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Homefield Advantage is located at 625 Corporate Circle (off Julian Road). Call 704-638-2291 for info.
College basketball
The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association is hosting its annual preseason press conference and reception at the Charlotte Convention Center on Thursday, Oct. 6, at noon.
Each coach will share their prediction for the year; the Pre-Season All-CIAA Team and the Predicted Order of Finish will also be announced.
Interviews and a light lunch/meet and greet opportunity will begin immediately following the presentation portion of this event.
