Roaming the county getting ready for tonight …
Salisbury’s Joe Pinyan and Carson’s Mark Woody go back a long way. They coached together at Mooresville and they’re now coaching against each other.
As far as going back, however, Pinyan has to just remember about 365 days ago when his Hornets fell to Shaun Warren and the Cougars 42-27.
Carson’s win is significant. It was the last time Salisbury lost in 2010. The Hornets then ran off 10 straight wins and won the 2AA title.
“I just thought about that,” Woody said while being interviewed on the Roaming the County Internet show. “I’m sure coach Pinyan remembers last year’s game.”
Ya think?
Here’s what Pinyan remembers, Mark.
“We were going in for the tying score when Romar (Morris) gets the ball knocked loose. They stick a late touchdown in there they didn’t need.”
Bottom line: Salisbury made some mistakes and Carson took advantage. Let’s not forget that while Salisbury was the state champ, Carson was a 10-win team. They Cougars were mighty good.
“I’m not going to say they didn’t beat us,” Pinyan said, “but we look at it as we lost that game. We’ve got to go back and correct it. Our kids have looked forward to to this game and we’re going to make the most of it.”
Despite Carson only giving up 18 points per game, Salisbury’s wishbone is pumping out 46 per outing. So Woody expects Pinyan to talk about payback with his Hornets.
“I’m sure he’ll have something to say to his team about us,” Woody said.

As far as state champs go, West Rowan has quarterback problems.
They don’t know if they have one.
Zay Laster’s well-documented ankle injury is healing slowly, but his backup, Connor Edwards, is also out after injuring a finger in practice. Coach Scott Young reports Edwards’ finger will be in a splint 4-to-6 weeks. The option is surgery.
So who’s the quarterback as West travels to South tonight? I posed that question to the Falcon staff.
“We’re going to 8-quarter B.J. Sherrill,” quipped assistant Joe Nixon, referring to the current Catawba freshman QB.
“Tell ’em I’m starting,” Young said.
Funny, funny guys.
Laster will probably give it his best shot. But due to a lack of mobility, the Falcons’ running quarterback may have to turn into a pocket passer.

Staying in the pocket is something South’s Nathan Lambert has done well enough to lead the county in passing. We’re not surprised, considering Bobby Myers came down from North Rowan as the Raiders’ QB coach.
“Bobby has done a great job with Nathan,” South coach Jason Rollins said. “Even when Nathan comes to the sidelines, Bobby is there is his ear. When you’ve got that going on, it makes your quarterback better.”
No one’s stopped Lambert yet. The only problem is, South’s defense hasn’t stopped anybody yet, giving up 46 points per game.

East Rowan is the other team in the county at home tonight. The Mustangs, who are getting better every week, greet West Iredell.
North Rowan leaves Spencer, goes past Lexington and through Asheboro before it finally gets to East Montgomery. A.L. Brown is home to Central Cabarrus and Davie travels to Hibriten.

• On WSTP 1490 AM, Hall of Famer Howard Platt will call the Salisbury-Carson game with “Cowboy Chris” Sifford. “Cowboy Chris” is the perfect sidekick for Platt, considering Sifford, one of the best athletes in North Rowan history, is a Dallas fan and Platt is a well-known Redskins follower. We’re hoping no punches are thrown.
Just kidding. “Cowboy Chris” is a great guy and there will be some entertaining banter between the two, I’m sure.
• On WSAT 1280 AM, Lance, Glenn, Johnny and the boys will also be at Ludwig Stadium for Salisbury-Carson.
• Carl Ford, the “Commissioner of High School Football” and The Coach, Bob Parker, will call South Rowan’s home game against West on WRNA 1140 AM.
