Textile Heritage Festival in Cooleemee
COOLEEMEE — On Saturday, Sept. 24, Cooleemee’s 20th annual Textile Heritage Festival will take place beginning at 10 a.m.
The “Days Gone By” Textiles exhibit will show handmade textiles, items that are part of local textile heritage, where creativity was poured into producing useful items.
At noon the Greenville Textile Heritage Band will perform on period instruments that are 75 to 100 years old. Their band uniforms are authentic and the performance is representative of a proud musical tradition that was an integral part of textile communities across the South.
The Textile Heritage Festival will again feature the Carolina Cornbread Contest, a look at how the old spinning mill at Saxapahaw is now a commercial success, the “Days Gone By” Textiles Exhibit, food, more music, games for the kids. Gates open at 10 a.m. at the Historic Zachary House grounds at 131 Church Street. In addition, The Mill House Museum will be open during the Festival.
Two WVAC receptions
Waterworks Visual Arts Center will host two receptions tonight, Thursday, Sept. 22, from 5-6:30 p.m. for Abundant Living Adult Day Services’ “Art for the Soul” and The Arc of Rowan’s Summer Day Program participants.
Art for the Soul is the result of creative programming for Abundant Living’s residents based on a failure-free environment. Students will showcase artwork from photography, painting and sculpture classes. This exhibition will be on display through Nov. 12 in the Delhaize Conference Room. The Arc of Rowan will feature artwork by children of their Summer Day Program. The Arc of Rowan provides services and support for people of all ages with intellectual and development disabilities. This exhibition will be on display through Sept. 28 in the Graham Studio.

RCCA concerts
Season tickets for the Rowan County Concert Association my be purchased at the Rowan Visitor’s Center, open 9-5 Monday through Saturday.
Four Reciprocal Concerts are coming up this weekend and tickets are necessary if you plan to attend.

New studio opens
Jimmy Alston, former artist with Railwalk Studio and Gallery, has opened his own studio. J Alston’s of Salisbury Studio and Gallery will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. The gallery is located at 1007 Richard St.
The hours of operation for the gallery will be Mondays and Tuesdays, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. and at other times by appointment at 704 232-1467.
The gallery will also offer instructional classes in the medium of pastels as well as lead guitar.
GraceFest benefit
GraceFest 2011 takes place at Saving Grace Farm on Sept. 24 beginning at 4 p.m.
Activities include raffles, food, games and vendors until 7 p.m., plus live music until 7 and beyond by Little Johnny Trailer Trash, The Hummingbirds, Big Break, CaLeb Hill and Yadkin River Theory.
There will be a silent auction of a commissioned artwork, a Charleston vacation, furniture, gift baskets and original autographed sports items.
Advance tickets are $25 (children under 12 are free) and $30 at the door. All proceeds benefit programs at Saving Grace Farm, whose goal is therapy for mind, body and spirit through companionship and exercise with horses. .

Fiddlers’ Convention
GRANITE QUARRY — The 45th annual Granite Quarry Fiddlers Convention is Oct. 1 in the East Rowan High School auditorium on US Highway 52, south of Granite Quarry.
There will be $1,700 in cash awards, plus trophies and rosettes awarded to the best bands, fiddler, banjo picker, guitarist, mandolin player, bass player, dobro and vocal. Rosettes will be awarded for the most promising talent ages 11 and under and ages 12-16.
