First Calvary Baptist Church recently awarded the first Rebecca W. Kelly and John Frank Kelly Scholarship of $1,000 to Lockwood Anthony-Joshua Ray.
Linda J. Kelly, speaking for the family, is pleased to announce the establishment of a scholarship in honor of their parents. Linda Kelly shared that their parents, Rebecca and John Frank Kelly, were active members of First Calvary Baptist Church their entire adult lives. They constantly exhibited their commitment to young people, education and community service.
She went on to say, “As each of us, their five children, graduated high school and went on to college and military service, we were fortunate to carry with us the strong support of our First Calvary church family. We are now pleased to honor our parents through the church and community that they loved by providing up to a four-year scholarship annually for a deserving young member of First Calvary Baptist Church, who exhibits high academic achievement, personal integrity and service to community. Joshua Ray epitomizes these qualities, and we congratulate Joshua and his parents on his being the first recipient of the Rebecca W. Kelly and John Frank Kelly Scholarship.”
Joshua, son of Lockwood and Lorna Brown-Ray, is a graduate of A.L. Brown High School, Kannapolis. Joshua was an A/B honor roll student, participated in the marching band, concert band, Link Crew and Committed Young Christians. He received the Service Above Self Award and graduated magna cum laude. He was active at First Calvary as an usher, youth missionary, in Sunday school and youth announcer. Joshua is attending Lees-McRae College where he’s majoring in communication arts and journalism.
