Area athletes update: Lott, Witte help ASU roll

Area athletes update…
Jamill Lott (A.L. Brown) made a 30-yard reception, the first of his college career, in Appalachian State’s romp against Savannah State on Saturday. Lott set up a first-and-goal at the 10.
Gordy Witte Jr. (Salisbury) recovered a fumble for the Mountaineers.
nChris Smith (West Rowan) started at defensive end for Arkansas in a win against Troy and contributed four tackles, a sack for a loss of 6 yards and a QB hurry.
n Army’s Jon Crucitti (West) Carried five times for 23 yards in a win against Northwestern.
nTristan Dorty (West) made one tackle in Wake Forest’s romp over Gardner-Webb.
nShaun Warren (Carson), the FCS Freshman of the Week for his effort against Mars Hill on Sept. 10, had the weekend off. He made a visit to Carson on Friday. He was presented with his framed orange No. 5 jersey.
It will reside permanently in the school trophy case.n Lenoir-Rhyne’s Isaiah “Ike” Whitaker (Salisbury) rushed 16 times for 64 yards in the Bears’ 20-7 SAC win against Carson-Newman.
Whitaker, a redshirt freshman fullback, carried six times for 31 yards in L-R’s first scoring drive.
He also had several productive carries as the Bears successfully killed the clock in the fourth quarter.
Zach Long (Davie) started at linebacker for L-R and was in on five tackles.
n In Wingate’s overtime win against UNC Pembroke, Austin Lowe (West) and Joseph So (Salisbury) started on the offensive line for the Bulldogs.
T.J. Johnson (A.L. Brown) caught two passes for 15 yards for the Braves, while Ben DeCelle (East Rowan) had one reception for 8 yards. Cadarreus Mason (South Rowan) made one tackle for UNC Pembroke.
nTrey Mashore (West) had a 15-yard kickoff return in Catawba’s loss to Newberry.
Jacorian Brown (Carson) made a tackle on a kickoff for the Indians.
n Averett’s Anthony Bowles (South) caught the first TD pass of his college career in a win against Guilford. Bowles hauled in a 35-yarder for the game’s first score and also had a 12-yard reception.
Bowles played on the Averett jayvees in 2009 and was a special-teams player in 2010. He’s emerged as a key player this season.
Starting linebacker Chase Burris (East) made three tackles for Averett, including a sack for a loss of 12. Burris blitzed on second-and-25 and dumped the quarterback.
Zack Grkman (Carson) contributed two pass breakups for Averett and had a tackle for loss.
Jordan Farmer (Davie) made three tackles for Guilford.
Cross country
In the Mountaineer Open, Western Carolina’s Olivia Jacobs (South) finished ninth in 18:28.9 in a 5K and helped the Catamounts place fourth.
n In the Clemson Invitational, USC Upstate’s Ross Oden (East) ran his personal best time of 25:55 in the 8K race. He finished 64th and helped Upstate finish 8th.
Volleyball
In Catawba Valley Community College’s 3-2 win against Wake Tech, Breckin Settlemyer (Carson) had nine kills.
nNicole Barringer (South) had 12 assists for Averett in Saturday’s sweep of Shenandoah.
College golf
Appalachian State’s Lauren Smith (Salisbury) led the Mountaineers in the Terrier Intercollegiate. She shot 76-75 — 151 and tied for eighth place.
Pro golf
In the Nationwide Tour’s Boise Open, Elliot Gealy (Salisbury) finished tied for 57th with rounds of 67-68-71-73 — 279.
Gealy won $2,157.
ML Baseball
Seattle’s Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs on Saturday.
n Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Jerry Sands (Catawba) went 3-for-4 on Saturday against the Pirates.
He hit his third MLB homer and knocked in four runs on Sunday.
