China Groveís eighth-grade football team lost a close game to Mooresville 20-14.
Austin Corriher caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Andy Lear, and Dylan Livengood scored on a 39-yard run. Brennan Lambert kicked a PAT. Defensive standouts for the Red Devils were Peyton Penninger, Tyler Rary and Donte Hill.
n Middle school tennis
Knox defeated West Rowan 8-1 on Thursday 8-1. Singles winners for the Trojans were Kathryn Rusher, Lainey Slate, Chloe McGee, Zeenat Sabakada, Shelby Holden and Nellie Brown. Doubles winners were Rusher-Slate and Holden-Radha Patel.
n Erwin beat China Grove on Thursday. Winners in singles for the Eagles were Laura Agner, Caroline Plyler, Lana Jackson, Lydia Hartung, Kelby Porter and Haley Buffett. Winners in doubles were Agner, Jackson, Hartung, Plyler, Jennifer Earnhardt, and Caroline Dean.
n Middle school soccer
Sacred Heartís coed soccer team maintained its undefeated record with a 6-0 win against Statesville Christian and has beaten every team in the conference.
Arun Kelly-Rajan found Walker Latimer for the icebreaking goal. Melvin Bonilla scored on Annie Habeebís throughball for a 2-0 halftime lead.
Justin Boyd made it 3-0 by finishing on a solo run, and Latimer scored two more goals to complete a hat trick with assists from Boyd and Rajan. Elena Turnbull found Max Fisher for the final goal.
ěItís exciting when we are creating so many chances on goal,î coach Daniel Scullion said. ěBut itís great that our defense did not allow a single shot on goal.”
