SALISBURY — A state medical examiner has determined the cause of death for 60-year-old Gary Lee Hamlet, who was found dead after his car crashed into an embankment in August along Mount Hope Church Road.
According to the report, Hamlet died as a result of “multiple blunt trauma injuries” he received in the accident.
Hamlet was found Aug. 5, and the one-vehicle accident was believed to have occurred sometime overnight.
There were no witnesses and Hamlet was alone in the car. By the time investigators found Hamlet in his 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier, which was in a creek down an embankment, he was dead.
Hamlet was traveling south on Mount Hope Church Road. When he rounded a curve and got to the straightaway, he traveled off the road to the right, a N.C. Highway Patrol trooper said at the time of the wreck.
Hamlet’s car ran head-on into a dirt embankment.
It is believed Hamlet may have hit the dashboard, causing the injuries. He had several broken bones and bruises and other minor cuts, the autopsy report said.
There was no alcohol detected in his system, a toxicology report said.
