Couple receives probation for drug trafficking

A Rowan County couple charged in 2008 with trafficking cocaine received probation in court Tuesday after they accepted terms of a plea agreement.
Calvin Lamonte Gibson, 40, and his wife, Michelle Torrence Gibson, 38, both received 36 months of supervised probation.
In April 2008, four people were charged ó the Gibsons and two others, Stevie Linn Torrence and Willie Torrence following a two-month investigation of the sale of crack cocaine.
Investigators with the Rowan County Sheriffís Office, Salisbury Police Department and Mooresville Police Department had a search warrant for 2279 Bradshaw Road, Mooresville.
Authorities seized 2 ounces of crack cocaine, other drug paraphernalia and nearly $800 in cash.
Calvin Gibson was originally charged with trafficking in cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, maintaining a dwelling for controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Calvin Gibson was given 13 to 16 months in the North Carolina Department of Correction, which was suspended to 36 months of supervised probation with six months of intensive probation. He was ordered to pay a $500 fine, court costs and $600 for a court ordered lab fee. He was also ordered to undergo a substance abuse assessment as well as submit to a DNA sample. The money that investigators seized is to go to the Rowan County School System.
Michelle Torrence Gibson was originally charged with trafficking in cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, maintaining a dwelling for controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia.
She was given 15 to 18 months in the N.C. Department of Correction, which was suspended to 36 months of supervised probation with six months of intensive probation. She was ordered to pay a $500 fine, court costs and $600 for a court ordered lab fee. She was also ordered to undergo a substance abuse assessment as well as submit to a DNA sample. The money that investigators seized is to go to the Rowan County School System.
The couple both have jobs and three children between them, their attorney James Davis said.
The Gibsons each spent one day in jail.
Stevie Linn Torrence, then 49, of Bradshaw Road, was originally charged with two counts of possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and two counts of sell and deliver cocaine. Charges against Stevie Torrence were dismissed by the court in February 2010.
Willie Torrence, then 64, also of Bradshaw Road, was originally charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
Willie Torrence was convicted in November 2010 and given 45 days in the N.C. Department of Correction, which was suspended to 18 months probation. He was also given a $50 fine, court costs and the evidence was to be destroyed.
During the investigation, undercover officers bought crack cocaine from Stevie Linn Torrence and another unidentified male on at least three different occasions.
