The team of Salisbury Academy eighth-grader Grace Yatawara, 13, and Erwin coach and former Catawba golfer Allison Dupree won the inaugural Women’s Division competition staged in the Labor Day 4-Ball Tournament at the Country Club of Salisbury.
Dupree-Yatawara was the top seeded team and played against second-seeded Susan Morris-Becky Isenhour in the final on Monday. The match started on the par-5 13th hole.
A birdie 4 on No. 15 gave Dupree-Yatawara the early lead, but Morris-Isenhour won No. 1 and No. 2 with pars.
Yatawara took No. 3 and No. 4 with birdies to give her team a 1-up edge , and Dupree-Yatawara went 3-up after taking No. 5 and No. 6 with pars.
Morris won No. 7 with a par, but Dupree got that hole back with a par on No. 8.
The teams halved No. 9 and Dupree-Yatawara won No. 10 to clinch the match — 4-up with two holes left.
Dupree-Yatawara earned a first-round bye through qualifying and won a 19-hole match in the semis with Mechelle Kuld-Sharon Miller.
The fourth-seeded team of Ed Cook-Cliff Ritchie took the Seniors Championship Flight, winning 4 and 3 over second-seeded James Poe-Bob Rusher.
Randy Welch-Franco Goodman won the Seniors First Flight.
Steven Bullock-Guy Hoskins won the First Flight. Blake Wray-Ryan Honeycutt won the Second Flight. Phil Miller-David Miller won the Third Flight. Chris Smith-Kyle Wright won the Fourth Flight. Eric Richards-Davis Richards won the Fifth Flight.
John Frazier-John Henderlite won the Sixth Flight in the longest match of the day — 21 holes — against Mike Doran-Brad West.
Justin Lefler-Seth Waller won the Seventh Flight. Dan Wales-Andy Stepanian won the Eighth Flight. Ryan Stout-Carl Moore Jr. won the Ninth Flight.
Gene Mothershead-Aaron Mothershead won the Tenth Flight.

Irish Creek aces
The Club at Irish Creek reported three recent aces.
Tony Byrd made a hole-in-one on the 145-yard No. 8 hole with an 8-iron.
Matthew Whitt aced the 175-yard No. 15 hole with a 7-iron.
Ed Akerman had a hole-in-one on the 175-yard 18th hole with a 5-wood.
Prep football
Carson was unable to play its football game at Hickory Ridge on Monday due to storms.
It will be difficult for the teams to make up the non-conference game.
College football
Coastal Carolina quarterback Aramis Hillary, a transfer from South Carolina, was named Big South Offensive Player of the Week.
Catawba plays at Coastal Carolina on Saturday night.
Mars Hill running back Jonas Randolph, Tusculum linebacker Brian Alexander and Tusculum placekicker Logan Cornelius were named SAC players of the week.
The CIAA always announces a host of weekly honors. Not surprisingly, St. Augustine’s provided many of the honorees this week after its 30-5 win against Catawba. Coach Michael Costa, receiver Jamian Smith and defensive standouts Shonquez Nelson and Antonio Stewart received accolades.
Chowan quarterback Cameron Stover was honored for his work against Livingstone.
Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 9-6 in 10 innings to Greensboro on Sunday and fell one win short of the playoffs.
Hickory lost to Greenville on Sunday, so Kannapolis would’ve qualified for the playoffs with a victory in its season finale.
Collin Kuhn had a two-run double for the Intimidators.
Craige Lyerly (East Rowan, Catawba) is now on the roster of the Bowling Green Hot Rods, who qualified for the playoffs in the Class A Midwest League.
Spencer Steedley (East) had a solid start for New Britain on Monday.
He lasted 51/3 innings and allowed four hits and one earned run in a 5-3 loss to Trenton.
A couple of former Charlotte 49ers squared off in that Double A Eastern League game, with Steedley pitching to Trenton’s Rob Lyerly.
Steedley hit Lyerly with a pitch his first at-bat. Lyerly went 2-for-5.
