Anthony Famiglietti and Betty Geiger won the male and female overall races on Friday night in the Sunset Run 5K.
Famiglietti was the first registrant on Friday evening, having driven down from his home in Davidson.
Famiglietti, who is a two time United States Olympian, won in a sparkling time of 14 minutes and 43 seconds.
Geiger won for the women in 18 minutes and 13 seconds.
Famiglietti has competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics and the Bejing 2008 Olympics, both in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. He lives and trains in Davidson and is now the 2011 North Carolina 5K Champion.
Two movies have been made of Famiglietti’s life. His personal best 5K is 13:11.
Geiger, revered for years as a world-class runner, has visited Salisbury to run the Winter Flight 8K before.
Just after turning 50, Geiger was crowned Friday night as the N.C. Women’s 5K Champion.
Other lifetime accomplishments include nine times All-American at N.C. State University in track and cross country. She was the national NCAA cross country champion twice, and qualified for the US Olympic trials once each in the marathon and the 10,000 meter races. She had several top ten finishes in the World Cross Country Championships.
Geiger is a resident of Raleigh.
State championships were presented also to Masters runners (over 40 years of age), Grand Masters (over 50 years of age), and Senior Grandmasters (over 60 years of age).
Rowan Regional Medical Center sponsored the half mile fun run. Other sponsors included Cheerwine, Food Lion, Downtown Salisbury, Chick-fil-A, city of Salisbury, Rowan Visitor’s Bureau, Kluttz Reamer law firm, Sportrax and the Salisbury Rowan Runners.
