Sept. 17: Writing Your Memoirs with Anne Barnhill. The class will learn how to get started or continue with their memoirs, and will look at notable memoirs to compare various themes, structures and writing styles. In-class writing exercises will be given, and students may bring up to five pages, double-spaced, for review. Barnhill is the author of ěWhat You Long Forî and more. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from UNC-Wilmington and teaches workshops throughout the state. Meets Saturday, 12-5 pm. $75/$70 members.
Sept. 28-Oct. 2: Writersí Retreat at Folly Beach, S.C. This bi-annual writersí retreat at Folly Beach, is an ideal place to relax, write and review each otherís work. Daily sessions in fiction, non-fiction and poetry will be led by Karen Ackerson, director of The Writersí Workshop. We stay at an old-timey beach house across from the ocean. Oct. 22: Writing for Magazines and Newspapers with Mike Weinstein. Participants will learn specific techniques on writing and submitting stories and essays to newspapers, magazines and on-line markets. The class will learn how to write lively, inspired pieces, and receive tips on interviewing and doing research. Students may bring five pages of work to the class for evaluation and revision. Weinstein is features editor at The Charlotte Observer, and has won numerous awards for his editing work on lead articles and stories. Meets Saturday, 12-5 p.m. $75/$70 members.
