COOLEEMEE — Do you have a special handkerchief, doily, quilt, dress or pillow case that you love but sits hidden in a drawer or closet?
“Now is the time to show it off and let others appreciate it too,” says Bonnie Byerly.
Byerly, one of several volunteer festival organizers, is hoping to create a new textile dimension at Cooleemee’s 20th Annual Textile Heritage Festival scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24, on the historic Zachary House grounds.
The “Days Gone By” Textiles Exhibit is looking for all types of handmade textiles. These items will be viewed from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
“Remember, condition doesn’t matter. Many beloved textile treasures are worn and tattered. The more variety we have, the better — sewn, crocheted, tatted, knit, embroidered, needlepoint, quilting,” she adds. Think aprons, afghans, doll clothes, rag dolls, baby clothes, dish towels and samplers.
“Our female ancestors had so many skills and talents, including many that would classify them today as ‘textile artists.’ Their creativity was poured into producing useful items that could be worn or cover you at night. Each added their own touches to brighten up simple living,” says Byerly. “These items are part of our textile heritage.”
At 3 p.m. judges will award prize ribbons in a number of categories. Call 336-284-6040 to let festival organizers know you are coming, create an informational tag and have enough display space.
The Mill House Museum will be open during the festival. Hand-quilting will be on display there from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. It is located on Cross Street at the end of Church Street, a block from the festival grounds.
