SALISBURY — Caregivers for people with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia are invited to a free educational seminar on the basics of the disease, diagnosis and treatment Sept. 7 at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center.
The Alzheimer’s Association will present “Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s: The Basics” from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the senior center, 1120 S. Martin Luthern King Jr. Ave.
The workshop is free but pre-registration is requested. To pre-register, call The Alzheimer’s Association at 704-532-7390. The presenter will be Margaret Moody, associate director of program for the Alzheimer’s Association Western Carolina Chapter.
In 2010, 14.9 million family members and friends provided 17 billion hours of unpaid care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias — care valued at $202.6 billion.
In the U.S., an estimated 5.4 million people are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and someone develops the disease every 69 seconds. At the current rate, as many as 16 million Americans will have Alzheimer’s in 2050 and someone will develop the disease every 33 seconds.
