Six Salisbury firefighters continue delivering Hurricane Irene relief in Hyde County.
On Tuesday, the firefighters helped perform 168 structural assessments and handed out 100 bottles of water and 95 pre-packaged meals. They planned to help feed supper to 500 people.
“The day has been long but rewarding. Troops are in good spirits.” Battalion Chief David Morris of the Salisbury Fire Department was quoted as saying in an email from city spokeswoman Karen Wilkinson.
Morris and five other firefighters are spending their off-duty time in the humanitarian relief effort. They are: Fire Capt. James Farley, Fire Capt. Cory Orbison, Capt. Darrell Nichols, and firefighters Dustin Tanner and Chris Damato.
In updates shared on the city’s Twitter feed, the firefighters said they encountered vast mosquito swarms as they delivered water and meals to residents in Hyde County. They also helped distributed tarps and provided fire protection in Scranton, the hardest-hit area in Hyde which had only two of its own firefighters available.
