SALISBURY — Rowan-Cabarrus is beginning a new Compensatory Education Class in Salisbury on the North Campus.
Compensatory Education is a community college program for adults with intellectual disabilities or coping with a traumatic brain injury. It is offered free of charge to the students by the Rowan-Cabarrus Basic Skills Program.
The Compensatory Education program is designed around the strengths, interests, and the learning goals of the students enrolled. Lessons are taught on a multitude of levels. For example, some students are learning to recognize coins, others are learning to count change, and some are learning to write checks and maintain a bank account.
The program’s goals are to help the person get basic and life skills needed to function successfully in daily living by becoming independent and self-directed, and becoming an active participant in the community through work, socialization, home life and faith.
The class begins Wednesday, Sept. 6, in the college’s Building 400 on the North Campus in Salisbury. The course runs Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Students may attend every day or just part time.
An open house is planned in Room 4214 in the Building 400 on the North Campus on Tuesday, Aug. 30, from 4-7 p.m.
The class will be using the updated curriculum that is being developed for the state by Wake Technical Community College. There will be four domains of study: Functional Academics, Community Living, Health and Safety, and Leisure & Humanities.
Some of the specific areas that will be covered in the class include financial literacy, work literacy, self-advocacy, internet safety, healthy living and exploring art, music, drama and other leisure activities. At the same time functional reading, math and writing skills will be taught at the student’s level. There will be computers and other technology for the students to use. They will take part in general college activities, and regular trips into the community are planned using public transportation.
