Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) finally got a chance to close on Wednesday and earned his first save of the season in the New York Mets’ 7-4 win against Philadelphia.
Parnell walked Chase Utley to start the ninth inning, but he struck out Ryan Howard and Hunter Pence. After John Mayberry Jr. walked, Parnell got Carlos Ruiz to ground out to end the game.
Seattle’s Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) stayed incredibly hot. The former Kannapolis Legion star went 4-for-4, with three doubles, on Wednesday afternoon as the Mariners rolled against Cleveland.
Local golf
Will Collins (Salisbury) shot a second-round 67 on the Blue Mound Golf & Country Club Course in Wisconsin on Wednesday.
Collins shot 72 in the first round at Erin Hills and tied for 19th in stroke play at 139.
The top 64 finishers advanced to the match play portion of the event.
Prep cross country
East Rowan’s Cole Honeycutt, Brad Oden, Joseph Furtado, Graham Lyerly and Conor Honeycutt won the 5-mile relay event in the Wonder Relays held at North Cabarrus Park on Tuesday.
The Mustangs ran a time of 24:41 to break the meet record set by Mooresville in 2009 by 34 seconds.
Carson’s Jacob Fink, Chase Johnson, Nathan McMasters, Nick Thornton and Kyle Gillis placed second in 26:07, and A.L. Brown’s Timmy Hall, Mason Forrest, Johnny Hodge, Max Chandler and Jose Navarrete placed third in 26:15.
A.L. Brown won the 5-mile girls relay in a meet record time of 31:45. Natalie Tresslar, Osbeida Benitez, Erika Neese, Briana Landis and Aaliyah Jackson ran 31:45.
East’s Mark Almeida, Justin Allen, Jason Troutman, Jason Basso and Darin Basso combined to win the “B” boys race in 26:24.
The pre-Rowan County cross country meet will be held Monday, Aug. 29, at Dan Nicholas Park. Boys will run at 3:30; girls at 4:15.
Prep volleyball
Salisbury’s volleyball team swept North Rowan 25-12, 25-19, 25-18 on Wednesday.
Brielle Blaire served five aces, and Katie Canipe was a standout serving and digging for the Hornets (1-1).
Salisburys jayvees also won to improve to 2-0.
Prep tennis
East Rowan’s girls defeated West Iredell 9-0 in NPC tennis on Wednesday.
Lizzie Weaver, Megan Bullins, Rebecca Agner, Hannah Pressley, Kayela Wilson and Lauren Thomas won in singles, with Weaver, Bullins and Agner winning 6-0, 6-0.
Weaver-Bullins, Agner-Wilson and Pressley-Thomas rolled in doubles.
Salisbury won 9-0 against 4A Watauga to improve to 5-0.
Joy Loeblein, Katelyn Storey, Erika Nelson, Madeline Hoskins, Sallie Kate Meyerhoeffer and Alexandra Drye won singles matches for the Hornets.
Doubles winners were Nelson-Loeblein, Storey-Hoskins and Meyerhoeffer-Drye.
Prep soccer
Carson edged Concord 2-1 on Wednesday.
Nelson Granados opened the scoring for the Cougars, who were tied 1-1 at the half.
Late in the second half, Fox Correll found the back of the net to put the Cougars up 2-1.
Carson’s next game is Monday against Central Cabarrus.
Salisbury rolled to a 7-0 halftime lead and topped East Rowan 8-0 on Wednesday.
The Hornets (5-0) got goals from Bobby Cardelle, B.J. Woods, Zachary Sukkasem, Tripp Caldwell, Lucas Capito, Banks Fisher and Clint Comadoll. Fisher and Comadoll scored their first varsity goals.
Emmy Turcios had two assists, while Kenne Bonilla had one. Salisbury scored once on an own-goal.
Connor Miller and Fisher teamed for the shutout in goal.
Prep football
South Rowan High will pre-sell tickets for Friday’s varsity home football game against A.L. Brown today and Friday form 11-1 in the front lobby of the school. On Friday, South will open the back stadium gate on the visitors side as an additional entrance.
Tickets are $6.
Catawba football
Tickets are on sale at the Catawba athletics office for the Sept. 10 football game at Coastal Carolina.
The $12 tickets are part of a Catawba section at Coastal’s Brooks Stadium. The athletic office is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 3-2 to Augusta on Wednesday. Dan Black drove in both Kannapolis runs.
Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had two hits in Winston-Salem’s 3-0 win against Salem on Wednesday.
Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) hit his 16th double for Hagerstown on Wednesday and drove in a run in a 5-2 loss to Hickory.
East Y programs
The Saleeby-Fisher YMCA, East Rowan branch, is taking registrations for Mighty Kickers soccer, outdoor soccer and fall T-Ball through Sept. 3.
