CHINA GROVE — An 18-year-old Concord woman and a 22-year-old Rockwell man were charged Tuesday with possession of heroin after deputies received a call about a suspicious vehicle at an apartment complex on Flat Rock Road.
According to a Rowan County Sheriff’s Office report, Kayla Ruth Wood, 1068 Union St., Concord, and Matthew Ryan Fowler, 10720 Old Concord Road, were charged at about 6 p.m. in the 1700 block of Flat Rock Road after deputy Brian Long found several syringes filled with brown liquid and packaging papers in a 2008 burgundy Dodge Dakota pickup.
The driver of the truck, Chase Davis, of 240 Neazer St., Rockwell, told authorities he was picking up his friends and giving them a ride to “another location,” the report said.
Fowler, the front right passenger, initially gave Long a ficticious name, identifying himself as Kameron Davis.
The report said Wood and Fowler appeared “nervous and fidgety.”
Davis allowed Long to search the vehicle. The deputy found a syringe filled with brown liquid between the front passenger seat and center console, along with four syringes in the floorboard behind the driver’s seat and packaging papers with brown residue.
According to the report, Long was told Fowler placed a T-shirt over the floorboard drug paraphernalia after law enforcement arrived.
Wood told Long she was diabetic and used the syringes accordingly. The report said Wood did have a glucagon emergency kit in her purse. The kit is for people with diabetes who have very low blood sugar.
EMS was contacted by Long and Wood’s blood sugar level was tested. The report said the reading was “very high.”
Fowler and Wood were then both charged with felony possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Fowler was also charged with resisting, delaying or obstructing a public officer for providing a fictitious name, felony probation violation and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Davis has not been charged. Deputies are continuing to investigate.
Wood was given a $5,000 bond. Fowler was given a $10,500 bond. They were both in jail Wednesday afternoon.
Fowler was given 30 months of probation after being convicted of felony selling narcotics in June, according to the North Carolina Department of Correction Offender Public Information database.
