Salisbury Police arrested a Salisbury man Tuesday afternoon on charges of embezzlement.
According to a Salisbury Police report, James Henry Burris, 20, was charged with embezzling $25,000 while he was an employee at Jersey Mike’s Subs.
The embezzlement was reported to Salisbury Police on Aug. 8. The report indicated two employees from the sandwich shop embezzled money over the last two years, dating back to August 2009. No other arrests have been made.
Jersey Mike’s Manager Andrea Goddard said on Aug. 9 that the corporate franchise red-flagged the business after accounting irregularities came up.
Goddard said Jersey Mike’s owner Ken Hartpence was notified of the issue and a secret shopper visited the business.
“A secret shopper came in, and they did not ring her up,” Goddard said after filing the embezzlement claim. “She paid in cash and they did not put the money in the drawer. She watched them. That’s when they were totally busted.”
Burris, of 280 Scaley Bark Drive, turned himself in at the department at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday after police filed warrants for his arrest on Monday.
Burris was given a $1,000 bond. He was released after posting bond.
Salisbury Police are still investigating.
