Koontz gets grant from Dollar General
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded Elizabeth Duncan Koontz Elementary School a $5,000 grant. The back-to-school grant will fund programs, equipment, materials or software for the schoolís library or literacy program.

Since its founding, Dollar General has been committed to supporting literacy and education. To further this support, the company founded the Dollar General Literacy Foundation in 1993 to improve the functional literacy of adults and families by providing grants to nonprofit organizations dedicated to the advancement of literacy.
Teachers attendseminar
Ashlee B. Stillings of Jesse C. Carson High School recently attended a seminar held at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, which provides professional development programming for our stateís teachers.
A participating educator from Davie County Schools was Cherri L. Moore of Davie County High School.
Increasing teacher effectiveness is fundamental to improving public education. NCCATís professional development seminars give teachers the support and resources they need to be highly effective and enhance student achievement. NCCATís instructional programming is designed to focus on a set of overarching initiatives that include: beginning teachers and teacher retention; science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); leadership; and a new area called culture, curriculum and change.

Knollwood to host back to school bash
SALISBURY ó Knollwood Elementary School will host a Back to School Bash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the school.
Admission to the event is free, all you have to do is bring a school supply.
ěWe are trying to bridge the gap between the school and the community and get everybody involved so we can raise school supplies,î Parent/Teacher Association member Janice Junda said.
The supplies will be given to needy students and distributed among teachers.
The event will include inflatables, raffles, freebies, concessions and music.
Angela Artz will be leading a Zumba session at 9:30 a.m.
Children will have the opportunity to meet the Chic-fil-A cow and McGruff the Crime Dog. The Rowan County Public Library will also be on hand to issue library cards.
ěThis is our first time doing this so weíre hoping we have a good turnout and maybe we can do it annually,î Junda said.
