Senior citizens are the number one target of con artists. Scam Jam informs citizens about frauds and scams in our community and educates the citizens about what to look for and listen to, who to contact with a complaint and how to protect themselves.
Scam Jam will be held Wednesday, Aug. 31, 1-4 p.m. at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, 1120 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. Scam Jam is free, but registration in advance is requested for planning purposes. Call 704-216-7714 to register for Scam Jam. All age groups may attend.
Speakers from the N.C. Office of the Secretary of State, U.S. Postal Service, N.C. Department of Insurance, N.C. Attorney General’s Office, Better Business Bureau and Salisbury Police Department will cover topics including scams aimed specifically at seniors, investment and charity fraud, Ponzi schemes, Internet, telephone and mail fraud, Medicare and other insurance scams, identity theft, consumer tips, home repair fraud, sweepstake and prize patrol scams, credit report checking and more.
The agencies will cover what to do when you suspect you are being scammed, how to register a complaint with a state agency, filing a report with the police and much more.
Scam Jam is sponsored by AARP-NC, Salisbury-Rowan AARP chapter, Rufty-Holmes Senior Center and Rowan County Council on Aging. The Salisbury-Rowan AARP chapter meets the first Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center. The Rowan County Council on Aging meets the fourth Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center.
AARP North Carolina has been working for several years with the attending agencies to present more than 100 consumer fraud forums across North Carolina to help educate citizens 50 and over on protecting themselves from frauds and scams.
