The N.C. Department of Transportation will begin overnight closures of Interstate 40 in Iredell and Davie counties starting at 10 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, until 6 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, weather permitting.
The closures are necessary for crews with APAC Atlantic to install rumble strips on four sections of the interstate as part of a $7.2 million project that includes milling and resurfacing I-40 from mile marker 154 (U.S. 64) to mile marker 180 (N.C. 801). The entire project is scheduled to be completed in November.
Crews will break the project down into four phases, working on each phase for four nights. Closures will take place from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday through Thursday nights. Work will begin on I-40 East through the project limits, and then switch to I-40 West.
Truck traffic and car traffic will be directed onto two separate detour routes during the overnight closures. Eastbound tractor trailers will exit I-40 East at I-77 North and then take U.S. 421 East toward Winston-Salem. Trucks will then return to I-40 in Winston-Salem. Westbound trucks will get on U.S. 421 at Exit 188 and take I-77 South back onto I-40 West. This route will take an estimated 15 minutes longer than going straight through on I-40.
The four sections of I-40, as well as the vehicular detour routes, are:
• Exit 154 (U.S. 64) to Exit 162 (Campground Road). Heading east, vehicles will take Exit 154 to U.S. 64 East to Exit 162 back onto I-40. Vehicles heading west will reverse the directions.
• Exit 162 (Campground Road) to Exit 168 (U.S. 64). Heading east, vehicles will take Exit 162 to U.S. 64 East to Exit 168 back onto I-40. Vehicles heading west will reverse the directions.
• Exit 168 (U.S. 64) to Exit 174 (N.C. 158). Heading east, vehicles will take Exit 168 to U.S. 64 East, turn right onto U.S. 64/U.S. 601, left onto U.S. 158, and then left onto Farmington Road (State Road 1410) to Exit 174 back onto I-40. Vehicles heading west will reverse the directions.
• Exit 174 (N.C. 158) to Exit 180 (N.C. 801). Heading east, vehicles will take Farmington Road, turn left onto U.S. 158 and left onto N.C. 801 to Exit 180 back onto I-40. Vehicles heading west will reverse the directions.
