The board of directors of Lion’s Share Federal Credit Union has named credit union veteran Mark Curran as the new president/CEO of the $30 million institution based in Salisbury.
Curran has been senior vice president of business development for Palmetto Cooperative Services LLC of Columbia, S.C.
He is a graduate of the Southeast CUNA Management School (SRCUS), where he was elected by his peers as the president of the class of 1991. He also holds the Certified Credit Union Executive (CCUE) designation. Curran earned his bachelor’s degree from Radford University in Virginia.
Lion’s Share Federal Credit Union is for associates of Delhaize America banners including Food Lion, Bloom, Bottom Dollar, Harvey’s, Reid’s and Sweetbay Supermarkets. It serves more than 10,500 members nationwide.

Less than a third of Allstate’s nearly 12,000 agency owners earn the designation.

Gift bags, trinkets needed for Biker Blues and BBQ event
SALISBURY — Local companies are invited to provide items for gift bags to be presented at he 2011 Biker Blues and BBQ Rally at Tilley Harley-Davidson of Salisbury.
The three-day barbecue cookoff and festival Sept. 22-24 will host guests from across North Carolina and the region as judges and competitors.
The event provides an opportunity for free advertisement for businesses. Each guest competitor or judge will receive a gift bag.

The Forum presents event for Prevent Child Abuse Rowan
SALISBURY — The Forum will host “Spin To Prevent” from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 17.
All proceeds from this community event will benefit Prevent Child Abuse Rowan.
Spin to Prevent will consist of a five-hour indoor bike ride with teams participating and having fun. Bike teams can consist of one to 10 riders. Registration costs $125 per team or $20 per individual rider.

Tates to speak at monthly real estate investors meeting
Carie Tate, owner of Opening Doors Properties, and her brother, Chad, will present a “Rehab Case Study” at the Rowan County Real Estate Investors and Associates meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m.
They started learning about real estate in the summer of 2009 and did their first deal that October. Roughly 20 deals later, the small family business is getting a foothold in this tough market. They have bought 10 houses this year, and are looking for more. Carie Tate is a Certified Interior Designer.

Swabe new regional manager at PBH consumer affairs office
KANNAPOLIS — Larry Swabe is the new regional consumer affairs manager for the PBH office of consumer affairs. He will join PBH on Sept. 1, in the corporate office at 4855 Milestone Ave.
He has experience as the foster parent of a boy with multiple intellectual and developmental disabilities. His advocacy for this foster child led to a passion to better the lives of those with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.
Over the past 14 years, Swabe has worked for the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities in Raleigh, where he began as a program manager and later was named assistant director of program management. He was instrumental in introducing the College of Direct Support as a pilot demonstration in North Carolina. He managed an initiative to promote and implement the concept of providing support and services on an individualized, rather than congregate, basis for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Swabe initiated the development of the first N.C. Home and Community Based Services Waiver User’s Guide. He also facilitated a partnership between the Developmental Disabilities System and the state 4-H Program, which resulted in design of a nationally replicated 4-H curriculum and core program for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Lake Norman hospital a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence
MOORESVILLE — Lake Norman Regional Medical Center received designation as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Greg Lowe, hospital CEO, said, “What a great validation to the hard work, team efforts and processes in place moving us toward even better patient care.”
The program was started in 2004 to advance the safety, efficacy and efficiency of bariatric and metabolic surgical care. It is structured to help bariatric surgery providers continuously improve care, quality and patient safety.
Dr. Ryan Heider is medical director of the Center for Surgical Weight Loss at Lake Norman. The designation is awarded to both the surgeon and facility.
Bariatric surgery involves long-term management of obesity, type 2 diabetes and other comorbidities through a multidisciplinary team.
