Eden Prairie, Minn., won the American Legion World Series on Tuesday night in Shelby.
Minnesota beat Tupelo, Miss., 5-4 in 13 innings in the final. Lance Thonvold shut out Mississippi the last six innings, and the champs rallied from an early 4-0 deficit.
Minnesota had to win twice on Tuesday. It edged Nevada 2-1 to reach the final.
Major leagues
Seattle’s Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) picked up his first RBI in the big leagues on Tuesday. He had a run-scoring single to left in the third inning of a late game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Minor leagues
Ryan Query (A.L. Brown, Catawba) had a double in Rome’s 3-2 win against Greenville on Tuesday.
The Kannapolis Intimidators fell 5-1 to West Virginia on Tuesday.
Kannapolis was limited to five hits, two by Trayce Thompson.
n Burlington’s Rudy Brown (South Rowan) pitched two inning with two strikeouts on Tuesday. He allowed one run as he finished off a 9-5 win against Bluefield.
Indy leagues
David Thomas (Catawba) has 10 homers, 52 RBIs and a .282 batting average in Grand Prairie, Texas.
Thomas had two hits Monday and knocked in two runs on Sunday.
Lincoln’s Garrett Sherrill is pitching well out of the bullpen, with 12 scoreless outings in his last 14 appearances.
Sherrill pitched 12/3 scoreless innings Saturday.
Prep soccer
East Rowan defeated South Rowan 5-1, while Carson rolled 8-0 against North Rowan in opening-round games in the Rowan County Soccer Tournament on Monday.
Semifinals are today at Catawba with Carson taking on West Rowan at 5 p.m., and East Rowan playing Salisbury at 7 p.m.

College volleyball
Catawba was picked fourth in the preseason SAC poll, behind Wingate, Tusculum and Carson-Newman.
Catawba got one first-place vote. Kaitlyn Whitmer and Shay Meeks earned spots on the preseason All-SAC teams.
Prep volleyball
Davie opened with a 25-10, 25-23, 25-14 win against East Wilkes on Monday.

Local golf
The Corbin Hills Ladies Golf Association played its first annual NCWGA State Play-Day Tournament event on Tuesday.
Treva Honeycutt won low net. Second low net went to Karla Swanson. Third low net went to Gail Capone.
Phyllis Durland had low gross. Second low gross went to Kristi Laton. Third low gross went to Becky Isenhour.
Bev Cobb had low putts.
Three local golfers competed in the recent National Junior Golf Tournament Summer Tour championship at Raintree in Charlotte.
Logan Shuping, 13 , finished second out of 21 in the 12-13 age group. Shuping shot a 42-37— 79 each day for a two-day total of 158.
Michael Childress finished fifth in the 10-11 age group with 86-80 — 166.
Ben Childress won the 7-under age group with a 41-41 — 82.
