Blood supplies leaving for hospitals as soon as they arrive at Red Cross

The American Red Cross says hundreds of local donors responded to the appeal for blood issued in July. However, the need remains as the blood supply is not yet back to adequate levels, and blood products continue to go to area hospitals as quickly as they come in.
Nationally, more than 500,000 blood donors are needed during August to help the Red Cross keep up with demand.
ěThe Carolinas Region is extremely grateful to those who have rolled up a sleeve to give blood recently in answering our urgent appeal for donors,î said Joyce Brendel, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region. ěHowever, weíre not out of the woods yet, and we need to continue rebuilding our blood supply to adequate levels.î
The Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region provides blood to 103 hospitals and must have 1,600 people give blood and platelets each weekday to meet hospital demand. Accident victims, as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses receive lifesaving transfusions every day. There is no substitute for blood and volunteer donors are the only source.
Most healthy people age 17 and older ó 16 with parental consent ó who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements. Bring your Red Cross blood donor card or other form of identification when donating.
