SALISBURY — The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office released more information Sunday about arrest of a man charged in connection with the armed robbery of a family on Deal Road.
The Sheriff’s Office charged Roderick Darnell Hardin, 38, of 421 Walnut Ave., Indian Trail, with felony robbery with a dangerous weapon and six counts of second-degree kidnapping Saturday.
Shortly after 8 p.m. July 21 two armed men approached Scott Beaver and his family at their Mooresville home.
The men forced them inside, where they bound Beaver’s wife, Shirley, and grandson, Nick Fowler. Three small children were told to lie on the floor.
The men forced Beaver to unlock his safe before leaving in a gold-colored four-door car with a large amount of money.
Detectives arrested Hardin at a storage unit in Charlotte on Saturday, where he was storing the money inside a child’s toy box belonging to the Beavers.
Investigators received information that the suspects had come from Charlotte.
After finding out Hardin had rented a storage unit on Monroe Road, detectives from Rowan County began working with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the State Bureau of Investigation.
The agencies began surveillance on the storage unit.
Hardin arrived at the unit about 2 p.m. Saturday.
He was arrested and transported back to Rowan County where he was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $1.5 million secured bond.
The second gunman has not been arrested, but police say more arrests are expected.
