A portion of U.S. 601 between Salisbury and Davie County could soon bear the name of the late U.S. Rep. Earl Ruth.
Rowan County Commissioners approved a resolution today recommending that the N.C. Department of Transportation name five miles of the highway “Congressman Earl B. Ruth Memorial Highway.”
Ruth, a native of Spencer, was a coach at Catawba College before being elected to Congress in 1968. A Republican, he won re-election twice and served briefly as governor of America Samoa, from 1975 to 1976.
Local activist Mac Butner initiated the drive to recognize the former congressman and coach. Members of Ruth’s family attended the commissioners’ meeting today.
