Scooter Sherrill’s company Above and Beyond Sports, will host the second annual Alumni Throwback Tournament July 28-30 at the Carson gym.
Games will be played from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on all days.
The tournament features overseas pros such as West Rowan’s Terris Sifford and North Rowan’s Bryan McCullough of the North.
The tournament includes alumni all-star teams from the Rowan schools and Davie County.
Each team will consist of 11-12 players, being coached by each school’s current head basketball coach.
Last year’s tournament was a huge success. It featured a DJ, and games were extremely competitive, with diving on the floor for loose balls and trash-talk.
This year the crowd will get the added bonus of alumni professional cheerleaders from NBA and NFL teams from around the country.
Sherrill’s wife, Jaqui Moore Sherrill of Winston-Salem, will organize the championship performance featuring ladies from teams all over the NFL and NBA.
Jaqui, a former Washington Redskins cheerleader, reached out to local high schools for their participation as well.
Above and Beyond Sports plans to expand to host camps, clinics, and tournaments of all sports nationwide.
American Legion
The June 25th game between Winston-Salem and Kernersville was protested in the third inning by Kernersville.
That protest was upheld, and the game must be resumed at the point of protest. The game will be completed on July 2 at 4 p.m. at Kernersville.
Kernersville reverts to 8-5 in the league, 17-8 overall, while Winston-Salem goes back to 11-3 in the league, 11-4 overall.
Rowan County will have $1 hotdogs at Newman Park for the first two innings of the July 1 game against the Mooresville Moors.
The Mooresville Moors stayed in the chase for first place with a 2-1 win against Stanly County on Wednesday.
Taylor Thurber pitched eight innings and allowed one run and six hits.
Keith Little earned a save and struck out two in the ninth.
Josh Holcomb’s two-run double in the eighth was the game-winning blow for the Moors.
Kevin Van Asch pitched a terrific game for Stanly, working into the eighth inning.
Kannapolis plays a crucial game against the Mooresville Legends at Mooresville High tonight.
Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators fell to the Hickory Crawdads in a doubleheader on Wednesday.
Kannapolis lost 12-2 despite homers by Trayce Thompson and Brady Shoemaker and also fell 3-1.
In the opener, Nick Tepesch pitched a complete game for Hickory, which scored in every inning except the first.
Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) stole two bases in Hagerstown’s 7-2 loss to Lakewood on Wednesday.
Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had two hits for Winston-Salem in a 4-3 loss to Potomac on Wednesday.
Rudy Brown (South) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Burlington in a 4-1 loss to Pulaski on Wednesday.
Local golf
In a Carolinas Amateur sectional qualifier at Lakeside in Laurens, S.C., Kannapolis’ Nick Buckwell tie for 20th with a 73.
Parks and Rec
Salisbury Parks and Recreation will conduct a youth baseball camp at Salisbury Community Park on July 11-14 from 9-noon.
The instructor will be Justin Morgan, who played at Radford and is assistant coach at Salisbury High School.
Cost of the camp is $40 for the week.
