People find ways to keep cool

In reality, summer has lots of beginnings. Baseball’s opening day. Memorial Day. The last day of school.
Officially, though, there’s only one first day of summer, and Tuesday was it.
And though the mercury for some time has made spring seem a distant memory and autumn something to which we can only aspire, temperatures in the mid-90s Tuesday were right in keeping with what we expect from North Carolina’s hot season.
And as Rowan residents boiled like peanuts, they went in search of relief. Many found it in ice cream cones and sweet iced tea and air conditioning. Others needed a fuller experience, like a pool or a playground water park.
With temperatures forecast to be around 90 for the rest of the week, they’ll no doubt be seeking that relief again.
But hey, it’s summer.
