Area sports briefs: Sands homers

Jerry Sands (Catawba) hit a two-run homer for Albuquerque in a game against Oklahoma City on Monday.
Sands has hit six Triple A homers this season and is batting .400 at that level.
n Dan Black and Brady Shoemaker powered homers and Spencer Arroyo pitched into the eighth inning as Kannapolis whipped Delmarva 6-2 in SAL action on Monday.
n Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had two hits for Winston-Salem in a 5-4 loss to Frederick on Monday. Wagner raised his batting average to .215.
n Wilmingtonís Whit Merrifield (Davie) also had two hits in the Carolina League on Monday. The former South Carolina standout is batting .278.
n Legion baseball
Rowan County returns to action tonight with a home game at 7 p.m. against Northern Division foe Surry County.
n Wood bat leagues
Garrett Furr (Catawba) has hit two homers in the early going for the Morganton Aggies of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League.
Morgantonís Blake Houston (South Rowan, Catawba) is 3-for-9 with two doubles.
n Ross Steedley (East Rowan, Charlotte) went 1-for-5 in his first two games for the West Virginia Miners in the Prospect League.
n Asheboroís Trey Holmes (East) went 2-for-3 and drove in the only run for the Copperheads in a 3-1 Coastal Plain League loss to Forest City on Monday. Ryan Bostian (South, Catawba) was 1-for-3 for the Copperheads.
n Prep football
A.L. Brown offensive lineman Daniel McFaddin will continue his playing career at Guilford.
McFaddin, 5-foot-11, 240 pounds, was the Wondersí Most Improved Player award winner for the 2010 season and lettered on three SPC championship teams.
n College softball
Catawba senior outfielder Carly Sabat and freshman utility player Kayla Myers were named to the college division All-State team.
n Local golf
The 16th annual Adam Myers Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, June 18, at McCanless.
Breakfast will be provided by Biscuitville at 8 a.m. A shotgun start is set for 9 a.m. Lunch is provided by Chick-fil-A at noon.
The cost is $50 per person or $200 per team.

n Parks and Rec
Salisbury Parks and Recreation wil be offering camps the week of June 20.
Camps are fast-pitch softball at the Community Park from 9-12 daily, football camp at Hall Gym from 9-12 daily, and youth triathlon camp from 9-1 p.m.

n Price Hall of Fame
A new class of J.C. Price Hall of Famers will be announced at a banquet on June 17 at Cornerstone Church.
n College athletics
Appalachian Stateís Charlie Cobb was named Southeast Region Athletics Director of the Year by Under Armour.
Cobb has been at Appalachian since 2005.
n West football seats
Anyone wishing to renew reserved seating for West Rowan football should contact Jim Haire at jimhaire4@gmail.com by July 15.
Seats not claimed by that date will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.
n West girls basketball
There will be an informational meeting for rising freshmen and current West Rowan girls basketball players on Wednesday, June 15, in the school gym.
Summer workouts and schedules will be provided.
n Volleyball camp
Carson volleyball coach Kelan Rogers will conduct a camp for players in grades 1-6 today from 4:30-7:30 p.m.
Camp for grades 7-9 is set for July 18-21 from noon-3:30 daily.
Camp for grades 10-12 is set for July 18-21 from 4-7 p.m.

n Catawba tennis camp
Spots are still available for a Catawba tennis half-day camp on June 20-23.
Drop-off is as early as 8:15 a.m., with pickup from 12-12:15.
Camp includes drills, conditioning, match play and games.

n East Y Coach Pitch
The Saleeby-Fisher YMCA, East Rowan Branch, is taking registrations for the summer coed Coach Pitch baseball league.
This is a new league that teaches basic skills and fundamentals as well as YMCA principles.
Registration is for boys and girls, ages 7-9, who will be in second or third grade.
Deadline for registration is Saturday, June 18.

The Hurley YMCA has a summer T-Ball/Coach Pitch league starting.
T-Ball is for ages 4-6. Coach Pitch is for ages 7-9.

Champions in East Rowan Diamond Sports baseball leagues were:
n Chuck Kepleyís Tigers won Coach Pitch with a 13-0 record.
n Minor league champions were the Diamondbacks, coached by Greg Shull.
n Major league champions were the Indians. Coached by David Earnhardt, they went 13-3-1.
