Elliot Gealy (Salisbury) had a solid tournament on the Nationwide Tour over the weekend, shooting 68-69-70-67 ó 274 to finish 10-under in the Rex Hospital Open held in Raleigh. Gealy tied for 11th and won $12,100.
Gealy will be playing in his first U.S. Open this week at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. Gealy shot 135 for two rounds in a sectional qualifier at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland to earn a spot in the 156-golfer field.
n Pro baseball
Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) pitched a scoreless inning to close the New York Metsí 7-0 win against Pittsburgh on Sunday.
n Jerry Sands (Catawba) had two hits and two walks and scored three runs in Albuquerqueís 16-14 win against Nashville on Sunday.
n Whit Merrifield (Davie) had two hits for Wilmington in a 10-1 loss to Winston-Salem on Sunday. Former Kannapolis Intimidator Ian Gac hit his 16th homer for the Dash.
n Three Kannapolis hurlers combined on a 12-0 shutout of Delmarva. Dan Black stayed hot with three extra-base hits, including his ninth homer. Kevin Dublerís three hits included his second home run of the season.
n Mets prospect Bradley Holt (Albemarle) has had a tough year with Binghamton in the Double A Eastern League, walking 40 in 57 innings. Heís 2-5 with a 4.26 ERA.
n Rob Lyerly, whose parents are from Rowan County, knocked in his 45th run of the season for the Tampa Yankees in the Florida State League on Sunday.
Lyerly, who starred for the Charlotte 49ers, is batting .317.
n Wood bat leagues
Ryan Bostian (South Rowan, Catawba) scored the winning run in the ninth for the Asheboro Copperheads in a 3-2 CPL win against the Martinsville Mustangs on Saturday.
n Trey Holmes (East Rowan, ASU) had two hits for Asheboro in a 10-5 win against High Pointís Hi-Toms in the CPL on Sunday. Austin Moyer (Catawba) pitched well for High Point, allowing one run in 31/3 innings of relief.
n Showcase baseball
Two of the countyís top rising juniors Brian Bauk (Salisbury) and Eric Tyler (South Rowan) are playing for the South Charlotte Panthers 2013 team.
Bauk had two hits in the Panthersí 4-2 win against the EC Titans, and Bauk and Tyler had two hits apiece in a 16-1 romp against Canes Central.
n Independent baseball
Down in Texas, David Thomas (Catawba) has helped the Grand Prairie Air Hogs move into first place in the Southern Division of the American Association.
Thomas has two homers, two triples, six doubles and 20 RBIs and is batting .266.
n Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) won his start for the American Associationís Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks on Saturday, holding Sioux Falls to three runs in 71/3 innings. Ward is 3-2 in six starts.
n American Legion
Rowan Countyís scheduled home game against Randolph County was washed out on Sunday and rescheduled for Thursday.
Rowan, South Rowan and Kannapolis are all off tonight. Rowan plans to return to action on Tuesday with a home game against Northern Division opponent Surry County. South returns to the field on Thursday at Lexington, while Kannapolis is off until June 20.
n Pro football
Defensive lineman Scotty Robinson (Salisbury, ECU) recently was traded by the Georgia Force to the Tulsa Talons.
The Arena Football League Talons beat the Utah Blaze 81-51 on Saturday.
n North basketball camp
The 3rd annual Coach Tony Hillianís Basketball Skills Training Camp will be held June 21-23 at North Rowan High.
The camp fee is $25 per person. The camp is from 8-12 daily and is for boys and girls ages 6-16.
