SALISBURY — A Salisbury woman remains in serious condition after being injured in a Wednesday afternoon moped wreck.
Sabrina Green, 34, of 1070 Denmark Drive, was flown to the hospital with head injuries after colliding with a vehicle shortly after 3 p.m.
She was driving a moped on Mooresville Road when a vehicle driven by Ashton Howell, 24, of 210 Sunset Drive, Apartment 434, Salisbury, crossed over Sunset Drive to Lincolnton Road and struck the moped. Green was thrown off.
Howell told Salisbury Master Police officer D.P. Fleming two mopeds were on the road, one behind the other. Green was driving one and her boyfriend was behind her on another.
“He did not see her, but saw the boyfriend, but decided he could probably make it but couldn’t,” Fleming said.
Howell was cited for failing to yield from a stop sign.
The boyfriend was not injured. Green suffered head and leg injuries.
Master Police Officer Brad Jordan said the woman was wearing a novelty type helmet — not one approved by the Department of Transportation.
A legal helmet has thicker liner, while non-compliant helmets normally contain no liner or a thin soft foam padding.
According to the N.C. motorcycle helmet law, which covers mopeds also, a legal helmet will have a permanent DOT symbol affixed to the back of the helmet.
Green’s helmet had a white DOT sticker on the back, but according to the law, does not make it compliant.
Green was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
