The St. John’s Lutheran Church Men’s Chorus will present its 16th annual Spring Concert on Sunday, May 22, at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary of St. John’s Lutheran Church in downtown Salisbury.
The chorus is directed by Rosemary C. Kinard, associate parish musician at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Accompanist is Janie R. Rollins. Special guest performers will be Greg Pannell, violin, Daniel Trivette, percussion, and the St. John’s Handbell Choir, directed by Rob Durocher, director of music ministries.
“A Jubilant Song!” will feature many selections for male voices, including “Set Me as a Seal,” “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” “Shall We Gather at the River?” “You Raise Me Up,” “Over the Rainbow,” “Finlandia,” “Amazing Grace,” and several rousing spirituals and gospel songs.
Soloists for this performance include: Frank Goodnight, Harvey Huntley, Stan Jordan, Fred Krusemark, Randy Overcash, Dennis Rogers, Chris Scoggins, Gordon Senter, Mike Weddington, and Donny Yost.
The St. John’s Men’s Chorus was formed in 1994 as a part of the fellowship ministry at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The Men’s Chorus has since grown into a community group, composed of men from the Salisbury-Rowan area who enjoy singing all styles of music.
In June of 1996, the Men’s Chorus presented its first formal Spring Concert in the sanctuary of St. John’s Lutheran Church. The yearly performance quickly became an annual tradition, which attracted large audiences.
From December of 1996 through 2007, the Men’s Chorus was a part of the Catawba College College Service of Lessons and Carols. In December of 2007, the Men’s Chorus began a new tradition of presenting its own Annual Christmas Concerts at St. John’s.
The group rehearses on Sunday afternoons in the fall and spring, and performs for many local events, local and out-of-town churches, civic events, worship services at St. John’s Lutheran Church and many concerts to benefit the Crisis Council’s Battered Women’s Shelter and the Rowan Helping Ministries. Current President of the group is Ralph Hair, Vice-President is Dennis Rogers, and Julius Waggoner serves as Secretary-Treasurer. Accompanists have included Karl Kinard, Janie Rollins, Adam Ward, Susan Trivette, and Rob Durocher.
This benefit performance is free and open to the public. A special offering will be received on behalf of Rowan Helping Ministries.
