ROCKWELL — Two people were taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center following a head-on collision between two small trucks in the 1900 block of Organ Church Road Wednesday afternoon. The names of the drivers were not available Wednesday evening.
The drivers of each of the trucks were trapped inside and emergency responders were able to free them. One of the trucks, a red Chevy S10, had a passenger who was not injured, and was talking to the N.C. Highway Patrol about the accident.
The wreck happened directly in front of the home of Dennis Holshouser, who said the crash sounded like dynamite going off in his house.
“As soon as I heard it, I looked out and seen it, and called 911,” he said.
The driver of the other truck involved, a woman employed by Duke Energy, was driving Duke Energy’s meter truck.
“She was hurting pretty bad,” Holshouser said. “I told her just to sit still.”
The driver of the red truck, he says, was talking funny and was disoriented.
Holshouser’s neighbor, Bob Fritzsche, said he didn’t hear the crash, but his wife, Natalie, did.
“She said it sounded like an explosion,” Fritzsche said.
Two tow trucks arrived on scene about 30 minutes after the collision and had trouble getting the Duke Energy truck out of a ditch and had to use a two-by-four as a lever. Firefighters scattered absorbant on the road where the red truck had leaked fluids.
Holshouser found a rim, change, tailpipe and the cellphone belonging to the passenger of the red truck in his yard. The cellphone traveled about 75 feet from the crash, the rim, about 90 feet.
N.C. Trooper Barringer is investigating.
