Representatives from Rowan-Salisbury and Kannapolis City school systems will be heading to Raleigh this afternoon to take a stand against proposed cuts to the state’s education budget.
House budget-writers have proposed cutting public schools by 9 percent.
They’ll be joined by parents, educators and community members from across the state for the “One Voice” education rally at Bicentennial Mall.
The rally, sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Educators, will begin at 4 p.m.
Attendees are encouraged to wear red and bring along signs and noise makers.
To kick off the rally, attendees will report to the visitor section of the House chamber to “make their presence known.”
Speakers, including North Carolina Association of Educators leaders, NCAE staff, educators, parents and students, will begin talking at 4:45 p.m.
Guest speakers for the event include Gov. Bev Perdue, former Gov. Jim Hunt, State Superintendent Dr. June Atkinson, the Rev. Dr. Nathan Barber, state NAACP president, and several others.
