The fourth-graders at Clemmons Elementary School were entertained Monday by a Plott Hound dog named “Lucky.” But Lucky is not just any hound. His breed is recognized as North Carolina’s state dog.
Libby Bagby, Lucky’s owner and a North Carolina author from Roaring Gap, came to speak to the students about North Carolina history and about animal rescue.
In her educational presentation, which lasted about 90 minutes, Bagby shared her heartwarming story of her Plotts rescue, the breed’s characteristics and explained how an object becomes a state symbol, an objective aligned with the fourth grade curriculum.
Bagby spoke of how she was driving on Highway 89 back in 2002 and rescued the Plott on the side of the road. At that point, she had no idea North Carolina recognized a state dog.
It has now become her mission, during her retirement years, to travel North Carolina and share her Plott’s story and the breed’s history.
After the presentation, she brought Lucky out and took questions from the children. Afterwards, all that wanted to, got a chance to pet Lucky.
