SALISBURY — A judge found a Yadkin County woman guilty today of unauthorized practice of midwifery.
Judge Lawrence Hammond sentenced Emily “Amy” Medwin to 24 hours in jail, which was suspended to two years of unsupervised probation.
Rowan County Sheriff’s Detective Sara Benfield testified in court today about her interview with Medwin, who admitted she did not have a license to practice in North Carolina.
Medwin provided the detective with her Virginia license. She told the detective she went as a friend to the home of a Rowan County couple who had planned a home birth and whose baby died. Medwin was not present at the home when the mother gave birth to the child.
Medwin did not testify and did not comment following the trial.
She gave notice of appeal.
